Fool Me Once Ending Explained

Fool Me Once has been one of the most mind-boggling dramas to hit Netflix this year. Towards the end of the series, Maya confides in Shane (Emmett J Scanlan), revealing that she killed Joe because of his involvement in her sister’s death. She then heads to Judith’s mansion to confront her late husband’s siblings Neil and Caroline over their family business.

What Happened to the Burketts

Joe killed Claire because she was uncovering the Burkett family’s shady pharmaceutical business practices. He and his siblings were falsifying drug trial results to make big bucks, but anyone who got too close was quickly murdered. It wasn’t just Claire, either – Joe had a habit of killing people who threatened his family empire.

Maya tracked down Corey the Whistle and used his audio files to expose the Burketts on a livestream. This caught the attention of Joe’s mother-in-law, Judith, who convinced her husband to kill Maya. She was right in the middle of questioning a nanny about a video of Joe that seemed to be postmortem. Then, her brother-in-law shoots her three times.

In the aftermath, Maya finds a recording of Joe that seems to have been taken after his death, but was actually recorded before. She also realizes that the bullet that killed her came from a gun accessible only to her and Joe.

Throughout the series available on solarmovie, Maya was aided by her friend Shane (Emmett J Scanlan). He helps her test the bullet that killed Claire and concludes that it’s the same one that killed Joe. It’s unclear if he knew she would die during their confrontation, but it’s possible that she anticipated that she was going to be killed and planned her own death ahead of time.

What Happened to Maya

During the final episode of Fool Me Once, ex-soldier Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan) sees her murdered husband Joe Burkett (Richard Armitage) on a nanny cam. She quickly puts her military police skills to work and figures out that the bullet that killed Claire was an exact match for her own gun — which was stored in her home’s high-security safe. Maya also discovers that the Burkett family’s pharmaceutical company was illegally distributing drugs with dangerous side effects and falsifying drug trials to boost sales.

After figuring out the truth behind Joe’s murder, she confronts Judith and Caroline Burkett at their home. They reveal that the nanny cam video of Joe was a deep fake created by them and their accomplice, Corey Kierce. The pair were hired by Judith to mess with Maya in order to make her question herself, lose her mind and ultimately confess to killing Joe.

As she tries to explain herself, Maya finds herself pepper sprayed by Sami (Natalia Kostrzewa) who reveals that the family is recording her to prove she’s lying. Judith then stabs her with a pair of scissors, leaving Maya to die at the scene. In the next episode, we flash forward 18 years and find that Lily — the daughter that Maya gave up for adoption — is now alive and well. She has a little girl of her own and names her Maya after her mother. She’s now being raised by her brother-in-law Eddie, who is joined by a shell-shocked Shane and Kierce.

What Happened to Sami Kierce

When Fool Me Once begins, Captain Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan) is grieving the death of her husband Joe Burkett (Richard Armitage). She then sees him on a nanny cam being killed by someone wearing a mask.

Sami Kierce (Adeel Akhtar), a police detective, is investigating Joe’s murder and quickly figures out that she knows more than she’s letting on. He also begins to suspect that the nanny cam stunt was actually a ploy by the Burketts to get her to confess to killing Joe. During his investigation, Sami continues to black out and have hallucinations, which he blames on the medication he’s been given by the Burketts.

Eventually, Sami discovers that the Burketts are involved in pharmaceutical fraud by falsifying drug test results for big pharma companies. This is why the pills were so dangerous. Ultimately, they end up making Sami sick and causing him to have hallucinations of his dead fiance Nicole.

He then enlists the help of Corey (Emmett J. Scanlan), an old friend, to help him expose the family for their crimes. They plan to livestream the Burketts confessing to their crimes and even arrange for Maya to stage her own murder on camera. In the finale, we see a flash-forward to 18 years later, where we learn that the Burketts have been imprisoned for their crimes. Sami is now back to full health after realizing that the toxic medication was responsible for his deterioration and his hallucinations of his murdered wife.

What Happened to Lily

A bit of a letdown, the Fool Me Once ending was not what we expected. Throughout the six-episode series, viewers were led to believe that Joe Burkett killed Claire Walker (Natalie Anderson) and staged her death as a robbery gone wrong. However, it turns out that Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan) killed Joe in order to get revenge on the Burkett family.

She figured out that the pharmaceutical company owned by the Burketts was putting out faulty drugs that were killing people. She teamed up with whistleblower Corey to help expose the truth. Joe eventually found out and wanted to stop her. He shot her and staged her death as a heist gone wrong.

To get revenge, she made her way into the Burkett home to confront them and filmed the whole thing with the nanny cam digital photo frame that she had placed in their home. While Judith tries to tell her that everyone just blames Joe, she is shot multiple times by her younger brother Neil. As she dies, she sees a photo of Lily and smiles.

The epilogue then flashes forward 18 years and finds Sami Kierce (Adeel Akhtar) at a hospital visiting a new mother. The young mother is a grown-up Lily who recently had her own baby and named her after her dead mom. It is also revealed that she and her husband Eddie Walker have been happy ever since she was left with their daughter to be raised by his parents.
